Tony Mendez was born in Havana, Cuba. Tony hated school but agreed to go once in a while when he wasn't at the beach, going to the movies, watching TV or listening to rock and roll records. Then came the Cuban Revolution. Tony and his parents had to flee, leaving everything behind.
They soon settled in Los Angeles, California, where Tony attended North Hollywood High School. Tony hated high school, but agreed to go once in a while when he wasn't at the beach, going to the movies, watching TV or listening to rock and roll records.
After graduating, Tony enrolled in San Fernando Valley Junior College, which he hated. He didn't agree to attend. Instead, he started doing cue cards at the television studios. Some of the shows Tony worked on were: "The Dean Martin Show"; "Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In"; "The Andy Williams Show"; Bob Hope Specials; "The Carol Burnett Show"; "Let's Make a Deal"; and "The Lucy Show." He also worked on numerous other programs and variety specials.
One show Tony loved to work on was "The Hollywood Palace," where he did cue cards for stars such as Fred Astaire, Jack Benny, Jimmy Durante, Ethel Merman, Joan Crawford, Diana Ross, Groucho Marx, Judy Garland and many other greats that he grew up watching on TV and films when he wasn't in school.
Around this time, Tony started to study dance and soon signed a contract with the Houston Ballet. After a season in Texas, he accepted an offer to train on scholarship at the American Ballet Theater School in New York City and he moved East. One day, on a whim, Tony accompanied a friend to an open audition for a Broadway show and he was hired on the spot. Some of the Broadway shows Tony appeared are "Applause," "Irene," "Pippin," "King of Hearts," "Dancin'" and "Evita." Additionally, he appeared in numerous Off-Broadway shows.
When Tony stopped dancing, he went back to doing cue cards at "Saturday Night Live." After nine exciting years at "SNL," he began working for Dave at "Late Night with David Letterman," and subsequently moved to CBS with Dave's show.
Tony's thrilled to be working on the very stage where "The Ed Sullivan Show" was taped. "Ed Sullivan" was one of the shows he used to watch on TV in Havana when he was a kid, when school work didn't interfere.
